The key to a successful fellowship experience is mentorship. Fellows receive clinical and academic guidance from all faculty members throughout the 3-year fellowship. Fellows are responsible for preparing journal clubs, lectures, and case presentations and will be assigned a different PEM faculty member to aid them in these presentations. This will allow the fellow to be exposed to different styles and techniques before developing their own.
In addition, each fellow is assigned a PEM faculty member who will serve as a research mentor. The research mentor aids the fellow in formulating a research question, designing a study, data collection, preparing an abstract and poster for presentation to a national conference, and in preparing a manuscript for submission by the end of fellowship.
All fellows participate in the Biostatistics Laboratory course throughout fellowship where they learn the basics of biostatistics and epidemiology, data analysis, and how to operate the statistical software necessary to conduct analyses for their own research projects. Graduating fellows are experts at examining and interpreting research literature for use in their clinical practice.
Fellows receive additional training in Point-of-Care Ultrasound and Simulation during weekly conferences and in rotations dedicated to mastering these important skills.
